【 明 報 專 訊 】 英 語 有 不 少 和 can （ 罐 ） 相 關 的 用 語 。 Canned （ 罐 裝 的 ） 可 引 伸 指 重 複 使 用 於 不 同 場 合 的 「 例 牌 貨 」 ， 例 如 一 些 處 境 喜 劇 會 在 「 笑 位 」 播 出 canned laughter （ 預 先 錄 製 的 笑 聲 ） ； canned news （ 罐 頭 新 聞 ） 是 整 理 好 供 各 傳 媒 引 用 的 資 料 ， 例 如 新 聞 稿 和 剪 輯 好 的 新 聞 片 段 ； canned speech 是 一 稿 多 用 的 講 辭 。

A movie is in the can 形 容 電 影 製 作 完 畢 ， 隨 時 可 以 上 映 ； 但 someone is in the can 的 意 思 卻 是 someone is in jail ， 因 為 can 在 美 國 俚 語 可 解 作 監 獄 。

和 can 有 關 的 慣 用 語 （ idioms ） 大 多 並 非 形 容 好 事 。 Open (up) a can of worms 意 謂 惹 來 一 堆 麻 煩 ， 有 點 像 廣 東 話 中 的 「 搞 出 個 大 頭 佛 」 。 強 積 金 實 施 後 ， 產 生 了 許 多 問 題 ， 包 括 回 報 率 欠 佳 、 管 理 費 高 昂 等 ， 我 們 可 以 說 ： The implementation of the Mandatory Provident Fund (MPF) has opened up a can of worms.

和 open (up) a can of worms 近 義 的 慣 用 語 有 open a Pandora's Box 。 此 語 源 自 希 臘 神 話 ， 潘 朵 拉 （ Pandora ） 受 好 奇 心 驅 使 ， 打 開 了 天 神 宙 斯 給 她 的 盒 子 ， 結 果 放 出 了 世 界 種 種 災 難 。

Carry the can 意 即 「  鑊 」 、 「 背 黑 鍋 」 ， 例 如 ：

(1) Peter was left to carry the can for his colleagues' mistakes.

(2)The minister ( 部 長 ) had to carry the can for the scandal ( 醜 聞 ) in his department although he had not been personally involved.

Kick the can further down the road 的 意 思 是 把 問 題 往 後 推 。 例 如 ： A comprehensive review ( 全 面 檢 討 ) of Hong Kong's old-age income security ( 入 息 保 障 ) system is such a difficult task that the government has chosen to kick the can further down the road.
