【 明 報 專 訊 】 At the... of someone 和 to the... of someone 都 是 英 文 常 見 的 片 語 結 構 。 At the... of someone 或 at someone's... 本 身 沒 有 特 定 意 思 ， 整 個 詞 組 的 意 思 取 決 於 配 什 麼 字 。 以 下 是 一 些 較 常 見 的 例 子 。

At the expense of someone/something ， 意 謂 「 以 （ 損 害 / 犧 牲 ） … … 為 代 價 」 ， 如 ：

In the face of the debt crisis, many European countries have to cut budgets at the expense of social welfare programs.

At the mercy of somebody/something 即 「 受 … … 擺 佈 」 ， 如 ： Japan's earthquake in 2011 showed that all human beings, whether rich or poor, are at the mercy of Mother Nature.

At someone's discretion 即 「 由 … … 決 定 」 ， 如 ： The thief's sentence is at the discretion of the court.

At someone's disposal 即 「 可 供 … … 使 用 」 。 如 ： With limited resources at their disposal, small and medium-sized enterprises often find it difficult to raise their productivity.

At someone's command 的 意 思 是 掌 握 某 種 技 能 或 資 源 ， 能 夠 運 用 自 如 。 常 見 的 寫 法 為 have/with something at someone's command 。 如 ： He has a rich English vocabulary at his command.

At someone's request /invitation 即 「 應 … … 的 要 求 / 邀 請 」 。 如 ：

‧ The meeting was arranged at the manager's request.

‧ South Korean President Park Geun-hye will visit the United States at the invitation of President Barack Obama.

At one's own risk 即 「 須 自 行 負 擔 風 險 」 。 如 ： Those who wish to travel to war-prone countries will do so at their own risk.

至 於 (much) to the... of someone 或 to someone's ... 則 表 示 「 令 某 人 感 到 … … 」 ， 可 配 以 不 同 的 情 感 名 詞 。 如 ：

‧ The football team has won four consecutive matches, much to the delight of its fans.

‧ The company announced that it would not give out bonuses, to the disappointment of its employees.

‧ The author's new book was poorly received, much to his chagrin.

‧ To the surprise of pundits , the candidate who fell behind in the polls won the election.

‧ The issue has been resolved to everyone's satisfaction.
